This is a big what if? And I’m sure I’m off here and there. It’s certainly more like a back of the envelope thing…
But the really shitty thing about global heating (lets just call it what it really is) is the lag in it’s reaching the atmosphere because up until just about now the oceans are soaking up more heat and have been sparing the atmosphere from much of the destructive effects. This sudden bump upwards toward the end of this cycle of instability as the worlds climate reaches a state that may be very different from anything ever seen in the past is going to feel like earth is kicking us really hard just when we’re down.
I’ve been thinking about this for a while and looking for some data that could help me and I finally found someone had done a Hiroshima bomb equivalence in carbon dumped into the atmosphere. The article is posted at Skeptical Science which is (in my estimation) very reliable. In that article it is claimed that the heat energy going into the ocean is equivalent to 4 Hiroshima bombs per second over the last decade. And that’s just what’s going into the oceans.
