Why the Fight to Legalize Marijuana Is Part of a Much Larger Populist Struggle – Ginsberg sensed that marijuana, a substance essentially banned by the US government since 1937, “was going to be an enormous political catalyst.” Though marijuana prohibition didn’t deter widespread use, the funny stuff did encourage doubts about officialdom in general. It wasn’t the chemical composition of cannabis that fostered skepticism toward authority—it was the contradiction between lived experience and the hoary propaganda of “reefer madness,” enshrined in draconian legislation mandating five years in prison for possession of a nickel bag of grass.READ MORE »

There is a saying; “when you’ve got a hammer, everything looks like a nail”. To a capitalist, everything looks like an abuse of capitalism. And all these extra people, these discards of capitalism must be curtailed. Totally something a rich guy would think. Cause you know, we’re living beyond our means of course.
So when the rich capitalist looks around, and sees the damage capitalism is doing to the environment he doesn’t say, oh, bad capitalism, he says oh, bad people, doing too much capitalism, and points out overpopulation as the real problem. Typical of what I call Big Daddy Politics, where we conflate the government as “daddy” and the nation as one big happy family. But eugenics is the end goal and fascism or authoritarianism in some form or another is the only way to limit everyones baby making capacities, and war of course to reduce population. We could never actually do anything differently sustainably, that never even occurs to the capitalist at all. That it isn’t overpopulation but unsustainable behavior and too much garbage both intellectually, and physically being produced by everyone will never occur to the business man.
And so we’ll focus on overpopulation because what better way to exert even more control over each and every individual than to start talking about legislating the number of children we can have. The oligarch’s view from the tops of their ivory towers are such that they view actual democracy, where we each participate in the decisions that effect us all as “mobocracy” and
This is really a call to more war and killing, and eugenics and fascism as the only possible solution as nature visibly collapses around us because of war and corporatism and too much killing.
And this is why the capitalist would rather talk about overpopulation than sustainable living.READ MORE »
The Ocean Is Broken – “After we left Japan, it felt as if the ocean itself was dead,” Macfadyen said. “We hardly saw any living things. Occupy Wall Street
Those who doubt that these moments matter should note how terrified the authorities and elites are when they erupt. That fear is a sign of their recognition that real power doesn’t only lie with them. (Sometimes your enemies know what your friends can’t believe.) That’s why the New York Police Department maintained a massive presence at Occupy Wall Street’s encampment and spent millions of dollars on punishing the participants (and hundreds of thousands, maybe millions more, in police brutality payouts for all the clubbing and pepper-gassing of unarmed idealists, as well as $47,000 for the destruction of the OWS library, because in situations like these a library is a threat, too).READ MORE »

This is a big what if? And I’m sure I’m off here and there. It’s certainly more like a back of the envelope thing…
But the really shitty thing about global heating (lets just call it what it really is) is the lag in it’s reaching the atmosphere because up until just about now the oceans are soaking up more heat and have been sparing the atmosphere from much of the destructive effects. This sudden bump upwards toward the end of this cycle of instability as the worlds climate reaches a state that may be very different from anything ever seen in the past is going to feel like earth is kicking us really hard just when we’re down.
I’ve been thinking about this for a while and looking for some data that could help me and I finally found someone had done a Hiroshima bomb equivalence in carbon dumped into the atmosphere. The article is posted at Skeptical Science which is (in my estimation) very reliable. In that article it is claimed that the heat energy going into the ocean is equivalent to 4 Hiroshima bombs per second over the last decade. And that’s just what’s going into the oceans.READ MORE »
When I get up on a February day I don’t expect to not need my long underwear, my extra shirt (tucked in for extra warmth) and my hoodie, parka and gloves… but today, I was greeted walking out the back door with actual heat. I came around to look at the temperature on the big thermometer in the front yard and it’s 54 degrees Fahrenheit today.
So I thought I’d check what the historical record said about this particular day. Was this a record? Are Really cold Februaries just a figment of this dirty old hippies imagination? Was it really uphill both ways?
So here’s a screenshot of the wunderground almanac page on this day:READ MORE »
Continents Carbonate Capacitor: Long Term Geological Cycle Switches Earth From Icehouse To Greenhouse
From Science Daily
Here’s an interesting tidbit of info regarding earths climate and the increase in carbon dioxide that results from volcanic activity when the volcano is on a continent as opposed to deep ocean vents, or volcanoes on islands. The storage of carbon in the form of carbonates on continents make them “carbon capacitors” in the words of one scientist, Cin-Ty Lee professor of Earth science at Rice University in Houston, Texas.
“Continents store massive amounts of carbon dioxide in sedimentary carbonates like limestone and marble, and it appears that these reservoirs are tapped from time to time by volcanoes, which release large amounts of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.”
So now that most hotspots are under islands instead of continents, we should have been in Icehouse conditions for quite some time as earth left previous carbonate deposits alone. But humans have changed all that.READ MORE »
