Two workers were hospitalized when they came in contact with water 10,000 times more radioactive than it should have been. The hospitalized workers were working to lay out cable in the basement of reactor three when radiation alarms began sounding. They continued to work despite the alarms and were later taken to the hospital.

The wikipedia entry on the nuclear accident at Chernobyl is worth reading in light of the current nuclear disaster playing out in Japan post Tsunami 2011 at the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear power facility.
The meltdown at Chernobyl occurred because of a mistake in a test during routine shutdown for maintenance of the reactor. It shouldn’t have happened. But it is worth reading because most people don’t understand that even while shut off, nuclear reactors require cooling. Spent fuel rods in cooling pools that are packed too tightly require electricity to cool or they burst into flames eventually burning the metal containment vessels.

It looks like we’re headed in the general direction of everyones worst nightmares. From polluted and un-healthy food being rammed down our throats, to shabbily operated nuclear power plants on California fault lines, every element of a dystopian future is primed and ready to make all our lives miserable very soon.
