Occupy: Moving Beyond Common Cause

The other day I was on a thread on FB that someone had posted a video that drew a correlation between the drug war and the race war calling the disparity in sentencing for blacks effectively “the modern Jim Crow”. So, in the argument, someone said: “Your rights end at my nose” and I couldn’t quite stop thinking about it. Here are my observations regarding that.

Solidarity to me means (and the United States is a union) that we look at each others issues and embrace them as if they were our own because it is our brothers or sisters fight and we work together always or we lose that right. Instead of trying to find only that piece of ground that we can all agree upon, solidarity goes beyond just finding common cause. You cannot protect your own unique perspective upon your rights without also arguing for those rights as they are perceived by your fellow human beings.

Why Dirty Hippies Make Great Scapegoats and Even Better Freedom Fighters!

A long time ago when I was a junior in a Catholic high school, I took a class called “Totalitarianism”. The class was taught by Father Mirabelli. An Italian priest who also knew what it was like to be marginalized. When he started that class the first thing he said to every student in the class was this; “Make no mistake children, you live in a fascist regime.” I was the only kid in the class that immediately agreed with him, all the other students protested and said no they were free. Father Mirabelli and I proceeded to prove that we were in fact not free. I knew we weren’t free because I smoked marijuana. I also knew that it wasn’t right that marijuana was illegal and as early as my middle teens I suspected that it was a strong and safe medicine effective against conditions too numerous to mention here. So I have a Catholic priest to thank for my own “radicalization”.

So when America threw the dirty hippies under the bus via the drug war under Nixon, they were really intent upon demonizing protest, and now the best tools the people have to speak truth to power is widely regarded by many Americans as only something a dirty hippie would think to do. I take that as a compliment btw.

More heartless republican blaming of the victim. And is that any real surprise? This is the season of hate for the American voter, on display for any that can bear to watch the hideous republican bloodletting primaries and “debates”.

By this reasoning, everything that happened to anyone that was unfortunate enough to “not make it”, you were guilty of being not quite “good enough”. Never mind the lifetime of being overcharged by corporations and under served by your politicians.

There have been some high regional atmospheric pressure records set recently and that is why we’re experiencing some of the weird weather we’ve been having in the Midwest. I’ve noticed an effect of the weather “flip flops” as I call them. They trigger my migraines. Rapidly changing barometric pressure, rainy days or high pressure sunny days, can both trigger a migraine for me. It was found that “chinook winds” caused migraines too. So I wasn’t too surprised to see it suggested that climate change was linked to higher incidents of mental illness.

However the real lunatics in the GOP which is now completely anti science (in fact anti-reality really), will eventually kill us all (even if we’re true believers), if Rick Perry wins the White House in 2012. This will be a real zombie win! The right wing’s favorite methodology remains the witch hunt. Coming soon to a formerly progressive stronghold you used to think was safe…

Of course, as Chris Hedges points out, the democrat zombies (he calls them trolls) that are supposedly on my side have thrown me under the bus every step of the way, they won’t be stopping this madness either.

We’re finally on our own!

Wow! The republicans have finally created a world where we are on our own! Isn’t it wonderful? Don’t you just love the “freedom” (from reality)? Can’t you just smell the rugged individualism? Or is that just someones soylent green burgers being sacrificed on some psycho right wingers backyard BBQ?

As we step back a few weeks from all the hoo haa the republicans have been raising about the debt of America (read: poor people living beyond their means and actually owning something), we hear some murmuring about the real culprit in America’s education failure. Could it be that the nearly 25% poverty that afflicts our society that is at fault?

I said a long time ago that you aren’t going to fix education in America by micro managing teachers and taking their right to collectively bargain their retirement, health care and paychecks, and their say in how large the class size becomes. On the contrary, more involvement, more democracy in the workplace is what is needed. Have I ever mentioned that the United States is itself a union?
